HERE IS OUR FULL REVIEW

I’ve homeschooled throughout my HS years (on the road a lot). I was in public school before then.

I’m going to be starting classes at the local community college (Austin CC) with the goal of obtaining an associates degree then transferring to another college (UT/A&M).

I’m honestly just worried about how difficult the work will be. I’m only used to so much from homeschooling, and I’m afraid that the work given will be out of reach (Math, L/A, etc.).

Not sure why I feel like that, as I often consider myself smarter than some of my moronic friends that are in college.

Is it going to hurt me that I hate reading and can only achieve a short range of pages in a novel?

Can anyone feed me the reality?

Reading is essential in college…hard to imagine doing well without it. Time management is crucial….as another responder said…don’t put things off to the last minute.

Take the comments on teacher ratings much as you would the entertainment critics….with a grain of salt. The quality of your education is largely on your shoulders and not that of the professor, college, or books.

If you are not sure how you will do, then don’t stack the deck against yourself. Look over the entire course of study…all the classes you have to take before transferring. Rate them in terms of your gut feeling whether the subject is "hard" or "easy" for you. Avoid taking a semester with all hard or easy courses. Mix them to give yourself an even balance.

For subjects you think are hard, allow time to prepare BEFORE signing up for the class. Prepare yourself to succeed…review and brush up before enrolling in the hard subjects. Don’t put them off until the end of your time at the CC. A number of things can happen: 1) the course you MUST have to transfer is filled or not offered that term; 2) you find it too hard and drop the class…and thus can’t transfer, 3) don’t pass it and now miss the chance to transfer.

As a guideline, plan on 1-2 hours of outside preparation time for each hour you spend in class (contact hour with the instructor). And for some students, it may be more like 3 hours for each hour of class.

Take a lighter load…fewer classes the first semester. This would make the first semester be more like a test drive. If you find it ok….take more classes the next term (but watch the mix of hard and easy classes). If it is harder than you thought, take fewer classes the next term.

Will you be working and going to school? If so, be careful to balance the work with study. Guide lines suggest a maximum of 20 hours work with a full time academic load (usually 12-15 semester credits or 4-5 classes). With 12 credits, this means you will be in class 12 hours a week for an 18 week semester. So, 12 hours in class + 24 hours of study outside of class comes to 36 hours…nearly 40 hrs or a "full-time" work load.

PS…I have had home schools students in my classes and they did much better than many traditional high school students….and there were traditional students who also did very well. It is the student that makes the difference.

Depending on your professors, all professors r different, some will give a lot of work while others will give you very easy work. And yes there will be a lot lot lot of reading in college. Sometimes in a English class you may have 2 weeks to read a 500 page book, it all depends. Just relax, if you need extra help, there r many tutors available including you professors. And remember HAVE FUN

When you attend college, you will have to put a lot of time and effort into your studies. You may be given a lot of assignments, and you will definitely have to read a lot. I’m not sure what your major is, but some majors will require a lot of math, English, etc. while others may not. Just concentrate on your studies and do not wait until the last minute to complete assignments. It is easy to fall behind if you do not study and prepare yourself for courses. You can also visit the website I pasted below so you can choose good teachers before you enroll in a course. I’m not sure if your school is listed, but if it is, I hope that this website will help you. Students come to this website to rate and write comments about the instructors that are at their college. If your school is listed, the instructor you are searching for may or may not be listed though.
