I have used Story of the World a little bit, I have Childs History of the World by Hillyer,
I am considering Biblioplan, has anyone used that?

What ages? I like Story of the World and the activity guide for grades 1-4. Really not sure what I’ll use after that, because I can’t find anything with consistently good reviews. It does depend how you want to teach history and what you think ought to be included. Story of the World was written by classical educators, so maybe you’ll get more out of it if you use it in a classical way, getting the kids to do narrations and whatnot. Have a dig around through http://www.welltrainedmind.com for more info on that kind of stuff. Otherwise, you might consider taking a literary approach to history. I know some who follow Ambleside Online for history and very much enjoy doing it that way.

I’m not familiar with Biblioplan, but hear good things about SOTW. I prefer living books, so we use Sonlight cores for history and geography. We’re doing Core 1 now (1st grade) and it uses the Hillyer book, among others.

If Sonlight didn’t exist, I’d definitely consider SOTW, but would probably lean toward Tapestry of Grace or Living Books Curriculum.

It also depends on what age/grade level. For middle school we really like the Drive-Thru History dvd series. The guy is absolutely hilarious that narrates it. Christianbookstores online has them cheaper than any place else that I’ve found, except maybe ebay.

Abeka’s 7th grade World History is fantastic also but it is part of a larger curriculum so you can’t separate the History classes on DVD from the rest. That and the Bible classes were so worth the entire plan for us.

We are using TRISMS… the ‘History Makers’ book. Its been ‘so far so good’ and at this point I think we will be using the High School volumes as well. It seems to have a good following by those that have used SOTW in the past.

It goes through history once in middle school over one or two years (HMs) and then goes through history again in four other volumes over four or five years for high school. I love that my son is getting a good overview of history while learning ‘how to learn’ because TRISMS focuses on learning good research skills. He’s getting a good grasp of how to find whatever information he wants or needs in the future. He is also reading fiction of his choice on the period constantly because of the extensive book list.

I am not I mom yet but I was home schooled since I was 4. The Sonlight Curriculum has a great history program. It using a lot of historical novels which made History for me, more interesting and memorable.

I used a Calvert cirriculum US History and our States history then my son was enrolled in an on site class where he takes World History….
I have never heard of Biblioplan.
