This American History Program is designed for grades 7-11 and will definitely take you deeper into the complex fabrics of American society. This curriculum starts with empires established before Columbus made his voyages and continues chronologically through the twentieth century. It is a fascinating journey and Sonlight’s American History in Depth does not just touch on the highlights of that magnificent journey – it uncovers the amazing people and stories that will help your student internalize what he/she is being taught.
American History in Depth
Using the award-winning A History of US series by Joy Hakim as their foundation, Sonlight takes your child through the decades with wonderful stories, photos and illustrations that will hold their attention. And because Hakim takes a more liberal perspective on some of the issues covered, Sonlight balances this viewpoint with extensive notes in the Instructor’s Guide. This proves to be invaluable. Presenting only one side of the story is a weakness with many history programs, but Sonlight seeks to present both sides so that your child can develop a deeper understanding of many of these issues.
As with all Sonlight programs, it is the literature that really takes us deeper into our colorful past and brings the history to life. Your student will read outstanding classics, gripping biographies and will likely become absorbed in this great American literature.
While the books are my favorite part about American History in Depth, this curriculum also fosters independent learning. For middle school students using this course, it is a step toward more independent schooling. The Parent’s Guide includes the answers to the literature questions and also additional note, so the parent is not required to read every book. However, younger children could also utilize this program if you choose to use some of the books as read alouds.
As with other Sonlight programs, if this is your first year using this program your student may not be used to the amount of reading that is suggested. Remember – you know your own child, so if you need to cut out a few books you will still have a great study of U.S. History. Let the curriculum work for you and enjoy this study!
